The process of butt forge welding was developed in 1953 for the railway transportations and then was applied for the construction industries.

At the time of construction and development of cities and elevated structures, Retrofitting and strengthening of concrete structures were put emphasize in order to protect lives and assets of residents.

Because of the torsion, bending and tensional loads excision in concrete structures, the joining zone soundness of the rebars is extremely important.

By using butt forge welding method, the mechanical properties of joint rebars will be highly improved.

So far the overlap joining method has been used as a simple and functional method to join rebars in concrete structures. This method is no longer reliable due to limitations such as lack of sufficient strength at the joining zones, complexity in arrangement of rebars, increased thickness, high costs and time consumption. Also another mechanical joining method of rebars named Coupler is getting outdated because of its high costs, time consuming of mechanical joining and hard implementation ofprocess in some sections, So it is being replaced by a simpler and more reliable method namely butt forge welding

This method has higher mechanical properties and much more cost saving.

Butt forge welding is considered as one of the welding methods that using oxyacetylene gas in which two ends of the bars are heated upon a point below the melting temperature and finally fully joined by means of pressur.

This method is not classified as a fusion welding but a solid state welding one, in which the joining process can be performed without melting the base metal.
Atomic reconfiguration occurs by surface heating higher than recrystallization temperature and joining is performed through the plastic deformation resulted by an external pressure.
